BYD develops 10,000-cycle sodium battery

KATHMANDU: BYD has reported progress in its sulfide-based solid-state battery technology, with small-batch production expected in 2027.

The company confirmed improvements in cycle life and fast-charging performance, addressing key challenges linked to solid-state battery durability and ion transport, according to Chinese media reports.

The automaker said sulfide electrolytes remain a core focus due to their higher ionic conductivity and production feasibility. Large-scale adoption of full solid-state batteries is expected after 2030, following pilot deployment in demonstration vehicles around 2027.

In parallel, BYD is also developing its third-generation sodium-ion battery platform. The new sodium pack is claimed to support up to 10,000 charge cycles. Commercial rollout will depend on market demand and customer deployment plans.

BYD’s dual development strategy covers both lithium-based solid-state batteries and sodium-ion technology, strengthening its position in next-generation EV battery development.
