KATHMANDU: Jeep is reportedly developing a new SUV based on the Tata Sierra, with a launch expected in the first half of 2028. Internally codenamed J1J, the upcoming model will be developed under an expanded partnership between Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis, according to Autocar.
The new Jeep SUV is expected to use Tata’s ARGOS modular platform, which supports different vehicle sizes and powertrain options. The model could be offered with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrains, similar to the Tata Sierra.
Under the proposed arrangement, Tata Motors will retain ownership of the ARGOS platform and license it to Stellantis for developing the new Jeep model.
While the Tata Sierra is manufactured at Tata’s Sanand plant in Gujarat, the new Jeep SUV is likely to be produced at the Fiat India Automobiles Limited facility in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. The manufacturing facility is expected to be adapted for the project over the next 18 months.
Stellantis is reportedly benchmarking the Jeep Renegade and Compass during the development process. The new SUV is expected to have distinct styling and equipment to differentiate it from the Tata Sierra, despite sharing the same platform.
Jeep is also known for offering four-wheel-drive capabilities in its SUVs. The partnership could help accelerate the development of a four-wheel-drive version of the Sierra for the Indian market. The electric Sierra is already available with Tata’s quad-wheel-drive (QWD) system.
The collaboration is expected to benefit both companies. Tata Motors could generate revenue by licensing its platform and increase component volumes, while Stellantis could reduce development costs and expand Jeep’s product portfolio.
The project is also part of Stellantis’ broader plan to sell 100,000 locally produced vehicles globally in 2028 through its partnerships with Tata Motors and China’s Dongfeng.
