KATHMANDU: Qatar Airways has placed an order to buy up to 210 Boeing aircraft in a deal valued at $96 billion.
US President Donald Trump, who is on a state visit of Qatar, made the announcement on Thursday.
According to the White House, Qatar Airways will purchase up to 210 Boeing aircraft, including 787 Dreamliner and 777X models, in a $96 billion deal. These aircraft will be powered by GE Aerospace engines.
This marks the largest wide body aircraft order in Boeing’s history and the biggest ever for the 787 series.
The deal is projected to sustain approximately 154,000 US jobs annually and generate over one million jobs throughout the production and delivery process. This will provide a significant boost to the US economy.
President Trump, joined by Qatar’s emir, described agreement as “the largest order in Boeing’s history”.
The deal offers a vital lifeline to Boeing which has not profits since 2018. The US company’s operations have also been disrupted because of the US-China trade war, including China’s halt on Boeing aircraft deliveries due to US tariffs.
For Qatar Airways, the agreement will nearly double its current fleet of 233 aircraft.
