KATHMANDU: Nepal’s fast-growing electric vehicle market is set for a fresh showdown in the affordable hatchback segment. The launch of the Proton e.MAS 5 is expected to intensify competition with the BYD Atto 1.
The Atto 1 has gained impressive traction since its launch in Nepal. More than 1,300 units have been imported in less than a year. Now, Proton is entering the same price segment with the e.MAS 5, setting up a competition based on price, features and technology.
Both models are offered in two variants. They come with similarly sized battery options. However, there is a noticeable difference in motor output and performance.
Price
The BYD Atto 1 Dynamic is priced at Rs. 2.975 million, while the Atto 1 Premium costs Rs. 3.38 million. The Proton e.MAS 5 Prime is priced at Rs. 2.999 million, while the e.MAS 5 Premium is available for Rs. 3.499 million.
On price alone, the Atto 1 has a slight advantage. The comparison, however, goes beyond pricing.
BYD Atto 1 stands out with blade battery technology
Battery technology remains one of BYD’s biggest strengths. The Atto 1 uses the company’s well-known Blade Battery technology.
It is available with 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh battery packs. The smaller battery delivers a WLTP-certified range of 230 km, while the larger pack offers up to 300 km on a single charge.
The Atto 1 also benefits from its compact dimensions. It is easier to drive and park in crowded urban areas, making it a practical choice for daily commuting and buyers with limited parking space.
BYD has equipped the hatchback with features such as voice control, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, a touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. The brand’s established sales and after-sales network in Nepal also adds to its appeal.
Proton e.MAS 5 offers more space and performance
The Proton e.MAS 5 positions itself as the larger and more powerful alternative. The Prime variant comes with a 58 kW electric motor and a 30.12 kWh CATL LFP battery, delivering a WLTP-certified range of 225 km.
The Premium variant features an 85 kW motor paired with a 40.16 kWh battery, offering a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 325 km.
The e.MAS 5 supports 7 kW AC charging and up to 71 kW DC fast charging. Proton claims the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in around 21 minutes using a DC fast charger.
Another standout feature is its rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout. Most compact electric hatchbacks in Nepal use front-wheel drive. The RWD setup is expected to offer a different driving experience.
The e.MAS 5 also offers a longer equipment list. It comes with a 14.6-inch Full HD infotainment touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, premium leather seats, panoramic view, rear AC vents, rear USB charging ports, six speakers and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability.
Safety features include six airbags, a 360-degree camera, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
The ADAS package includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).
Unlike the feature-heavy e.MAS 5, the Atto 1 takes a more user-friendly approach. It focuses on essential features instead of loading the vehicle with technology. Even a 360-degree camera is absent. However, the hatchback stands out with its sporty design and practical package.
Which one has the edge?
The competition between the BYD Atto 1 and the Proton e.MAS 5 extends well beyond pricing.
The Atto 1’s strengths lie in its lower price, compact dimensions, Blade Battery technology and BYD’s well-established brand presence and after-sales support in Nepal.
The e.MAS 5, meanwhile, offers a larger body, higher motor output, rear-wheel drive, multi-link rear suspension, a larger battery option and a more comprehensive feature list.
For buyers looking for an affordable, compact EV for daily city driving, the Atto 1 remains a strong choice. Those willing to spend slightly more for additional space, higher performance and a family-oriented package may find the Proton e.MAS 5 to be the more attractive option.
