KATHMANDU: The government has started preparations to resume operations at the Kodari (Tatopani) border point with China within the next few days, according to Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal.
Lamsal said the government has started the necessary work to bring the key China trade route back into operation. He shared the information through a post on Facebook.
The government has prioritized reopening the Kodari border after floods and continuous rainfall caused major damage to the Kerung and Korala border routes in the north.
According to Lamsal, the ministry has already made the affected section of the Arniko Highway operational despite challenges caused by the road conditions. Government officials and other stakeholders also conducted a joint inspection of the highway on Tuesday.
“After a joint inspection of the Arniko Highway on Tuesday, we have started the necessary work to resume border operations. Preparations are underway to reopen the Kodari border within a few days,” Lamsal said.
The Tatopani border was closed by China from September 1, without a clear reason, after the Rasuwagadhi border was shut following the flood. Nepal had started importing goods through the Korala border as an alternative.
However, floods caused by heavy rainfall since September 25 have blocked the Beni-Maldhunga-Korala road. Authorities say it will take a few more days to reopen the route.
