KATHMANDU: Landslide prevention and riverbank protection works have begun along the Myagdi section of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road under the National Pride project, Kali Gandaki Corridor.

The Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Project Office has initiated slope stabilization works worth Rs 250 million to reduce landslide risks and protect vulnerable road stretches.

According to Information Officer Engineer Babusaheb Kumar Baitha, contracts have been awarded in four packages with the target of completing all works within the current fiscal year. The Myagdi section of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road has long been identified as a high-risk landslide zone, affecting traffic movement along this strategic north-south corridor.

The project includes the use of rock anchoring, plum walls, bio-engineering techniques, shotcrete, and gabion structures to stabilize slopes and control erosion. Landslide mitigation works are being carried out in Raghu Ganga Rural Municipality-2 at Lower and Upper Baisari, Lato Khola, Rupse, Seto Khola, Nagdhunga, Guithebhir, Khambhitta, and Larjung. In total, around 1,200 meters of road section will undergo slope protection and stabilization.

In Annapurna Rural Municipality-3, Bamti-Konda-Tista JV has secured a Rs 70 million contract for landslide control along a 300-meter stretch at Khambhitta in Dana. Similarly, GSPL-Buddhisara JV has been awarded a Rs 90 million contract for slope stabilization along a 300-meter section at Guithebhir.

GSI-Hutairaj JV is handling landslide control works at Lower and Upper Baisari under a Rs 20 million contract, where drilling, steel rod installation, concrete base construction, and retaining wall development are being used to widen and secure the roadway.

Meanwhile, Gajendra Nirman Sewa has received a Rs 70 million contract for landslide mitigation works at Lato Khola, Rupse, Nagdhunga, and Seto Khola sections. Concrete works along a 160-meter stretch in the Rupse area have already been completed, while rock anchoring and slope widening works at Lato Khola are in the final stage.

The Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road is a key segment of the Kali Gandaki Corridor, linking the Terai region to the northern border. With landslide control works now underway, the project aims to improve road safety, ensure year-round connectivity, and strengthen this strategic national highway corridor.
