KATHMANDU: Multiple new EV models entered the Nepali market in fiscal year 2082. While some models performed reasonably well, several others generated strong buzz but failed to convert that into sales.

The year was not very encouraging for the automobile sector. Despite adequate liquidity in the banking system and low interest rates, overall vehicle sales remained weak.

In terms of new launches, the market saw models like MG S5, Proton eMas 7, Geely EX5, Jaecoo J5, Jaecoo J6T, iCaur V23, Leapmotor B10, Mahindra BE.6, Hyundai Creta EV, and Mahindra XEV 9e.

BYD also introduced Sealion 7, Atto 1, and Atto 2 during the same period. Other entries included Deepal S05 and Dongfeng Nammi VIGO. Some smaller Chinese EV brands also entered the market but failed to gain consumer attention.

Among the new models, BYD’s lineup, Jaecoo J5, and iCaur V23 made a noticeable impact. MG S5 and Deepal S05 also received positive response. Hyundai Creta EV, produced in India, emerged as one of the most successful models. Mahindra BE.6 showed gradual improvement in demand despite a delayed entry.

However, some models struggled in the market.

Proton eMas 7 was one of the most notable underperformers. Distributed by Jagdamba Motors, the SUV is considered strong in terms of features and overall package. But sales remained far below expectations. The company even reduced the price by around Rs 1 million, yet initial stock is still unsold. Dealer expansion also remains challenging.

Kia EV5 is another example. Despite global popularity as an affordable SUV, the model has not officially entered the Nepali market. Two imported units, priced above USD 40,000, have not been launched for sale.

With competing SUVs available between Rs 4.5 million and 6 million, the EV5 struggled to fit into the price segment.

Leapmotor B10 also saw strong discussion but weak sales. The SUV offers a 160 kW motor and competitive pricing. Still, it failed to attract a large number of buyers.

Other models like Mahindra XEV 9e and Jaecoo J5 gained attention but delivered only moderate sales performance.
