KATHMANDU: Floods and landslides have disrupted six major roads connecting Kathmandu with different parts of the country.
According to Nepal Police, six major road sections in Koshi and Bagmati provinces were either completely closed or facing travel restrictions as of Friday morning.
The Nagdhunga-Muglin road has remained closed for three days after the Bhotekoshi River flood deposited a large amount of mud along the highway. Around 13 km of road between Baireni and Galaundi has been covered with mud.
More than a dozen heavy machines have been deployed to clear the debris since Wednesday night. However, the clearance work has not yet been completed.
The Trishuli-Mailung-Syafrubesi road has also been completely blocked due to the floods. Several other major roads in Rasuwa are also closed. The district has been cut off from the road network after the Baireni bridge was washed away.
The Mechi Highway is also completely blocked due to continuous rainfall. The road section at Rajduwali in Ilam subsided, disrupting the route from Jhapa to Taplejung since June 15.
Meanwhile, vehicle movement on the Kavre section of the BP Highway has been restricted due to the risk of flooding. Vehicles are prohibited from operating between 6 pm and 4 am.
Similarly, vehicle movement along the Hetauda-Thingan-Lalitpur section of the Kanti Lokpath has been restricted from 5 pm to 5 am due to the risk of floods and landslides.
Authorities have imposed the restrictions as heavy rainfall continues across several parts of the country, increasing the risk of further floods and landslides.
