KATHMANDU: BMW is preparing to bring its hydrogen-powered iX5 SUV closer to production. The company is currently testing a near-production prototype ahead of its planned launch.
The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is expected to offer a driving range of up to 750 km on a full tank. According to BMW, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than five seconds.
Refueling the hydrogen-powered SUV will take less than five minutes, making it comparable to conventional fuel-powered vehicles in terms of refueling time.
BMW is currently testing the integration of the fuel-cell system, high-voltage battery and electric motor. The company plans to manufacture the iX5 Hydrogen at BMW Group Plant Steyr in Austria.
In terms of design, the hydrogen-powered SUV largely retains the styling of the conventional and electric BMW X5. The company has avoided major design changes to distinguish it from other X5 models.
The iX5 Hydrogen will use BMW’s third-generation fuel-cell technology. It is being developed as a zero-emission alternative to battery-electric vehicles, offering another option for customers looking for cleaner mobility.
