KATHMANDU: BYD has announced a major achievement for its entry-level hatchback, the Seagull. At a recent media event, the company shared that it has produced 1 million units of the Seagull model.
The car was first launched in April 2023, and according to BYD, global sales reached 992,637 units by May 31. This means the 1 million sales mark was likely crossed in the first week of June 2025.
The BYD Seagull, also known as the Dolphin Mini in some markets, has gained strong popularity for its compact size, affordability and advanced features. It recently made its debut in 15 European countries under the name Dolphin Surf, starting at USD 26,900.
In China, the base variant of the Seagull comes with a 30 kWh LFP battery, offering a CLTC range of 305 km. It is powered by a 55 kW motor and can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. For buyers seeking more range, a 43.2 kWh battery option is also available, providing up to 322 km on a single charge.
The Seagull is also being recognized globally. It recently won the 2025 World Urban Car award at the World Car Awards, held during the New York International Auto Show.
Despite its entry-level price tag around USD 10,000 in China, the Seagull comes packed with premium features. These include a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, rain-sensing wipers, 360-degree camera, heated and electric side mirrors, heated seats and LED lighting.
In Nepal, BYD’s official distributor, Cimex Inc., is planning to introduce the Seagull to the local market soon. It could be showcased at upcoming events like the NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo or the NADA Auto Show.
