KATHMANDU: The Toyota RAV4 has officially become the world’s best-selling car in 2024, overtaking the Tesla Model Y, which held the top position in 2023. The latest data from automotive research firm JATO Dynamics highlights the RAV4’s continued global popularity and strong market performance.
The RAV4, known for its reliability and practicality, sold 1.187 million units worldwide, an 11% rise compared to 2023. On the other hand, the Tesla Model Y saw a slight dip in global demand, selling 1.185 million units, which is 3 % less than the previous year. The competition between the two models was very close, with only 2,000 units separating them.
These figures reflect the performance of the outgoing models. Toyota is preparing to launch the next-generation RAV4 in 2026, which will be its sixth generation and will come exclusively with hybrid options. Meanwhile, Tesla has already rolled out an updated version of the Model Y, code-named “Juniper.” Despite this, Tesla has been facing a drop in sales across several markets, including Europe, throughout the year.
In the United States, the RAV4 also made headlines by becoming the best-selling vehicle of 2024, even ahead of long-time leader Ford F-150.
In Nepal, the Toyota RAV4 has also maintained strong popularity over the years. Since the launch of its first generation, the SUV has been well-received by Nepali customers. United Traders Syndicate, the authorized distributor of Toyota vehicles in Nepal, has been bringing the RAV4 to the domestic market.
