KATHMANDU: Motorcycle touring is becoming increasingly popular in Nepal. The trend is more noticeable during long holidays. With a week-long Dashain holiday this year, many people are planning trips to different destinations.

While some prefer cars for a comfortable journey, others choose motorcycles for adventure. Riding long distances, exploring new places and enjoying new views can be a unique experience.

However, a successful and safe motorcycle trip requires more than just starting the engine and hitting the road. Proper planning, safety gear, smart packing and motorcycle maintenance are essential.

If you are planning a motorcycle trip after Dashain, here are five things to do before setting off.

  1. Plan your trip in advance

A good plan is essential for a successful motorcycle tour. Without proper planning, the trip can become disorganized and risky.

First, choose your destination. Check the road conditions, including whether the roads are paved or unpaved. Gather information about the weather, accommodation, food stops and petrol stations along the route. Since you may not know every road in a new place, download offline maps on your phone.

Prepare a travel schedule and decide how many kilometers you will cover each day. Also, plan where you will stay overnight. Try to reach your destination well before sunset.

Long rides can cause both physical and mental fatigue. Therefore, covering around 150 to 200 kilometers a day is a reasonable target for a motorcycle tour.

Budget planning is equally important. Set aside money for fuel, food, accommodation and emergencies. Carry some extra cash, as online payment services may not be available everywhere.

  1. Choose the right motorcycle

You do not need an expensive or large motorcycle for touring. You can travel on a scooter, commuter motorcycle or adventure bike, depending on your destination and the road conditions.

For paved roads, scooters and smaller motorcycles can be suitable options. However, they may struggle on rough and off-road routes.

For hilly and mountainous areas with unpaved roads, a dirt bike or adventure motorcycle may be more suitable. Choosing the right vehicle for the route can make the journey easier and safer.

  1. Wear proper riding gear

Safety gear should never be ignored during long motorcycle rides. Always wear a properly fitted full-face helmet.

Riding jackets, trousers, gloves and boots with protective armor can help reduce the risk of injuries in an accident.

Avoid compromising on safety gear for comfort or appearance. Proper equipment is especially important when travelling long distances or riding through unfamiliar roads.

  1. Check your motorcycle before departure

A basic motorcycle inspection is essential before starting your journey. Check the tyre pressure, chain lubrication, brake pads, engine oil, lights and battery.

It is also advisable to get your motorcycle fully serviced before the trip. This can help identify potential problems and reduce the chances of a breakdown on the road.

Do not wait until you are on the highway to discover a mechanical issue. A well-maintained motorcycle makes long-distance travel safer and more reliable.

  1. Carry essential and emergency supplies

Always carry your essential documents, including your driving licence and motorcycle registration document, commonly known as the blue book in Nepal.

Keep emergency contact numbers for family members or close friends written on a piece of paper in your pocket. This can be useful if your phone runs out of battery or becomes unavailable.

Since motorcycles have limited carrying capacity, avoid packing too much. Excessive luggage can make the motorcycle heavier and affect its balance.

Use waterproof luggage bags and distribute the weight evenly on both sides of the motorcycle. Carry essential items such as clothes, basic medicines, bandages, antiseptic cream, drinking water, a power bank, a motorcycle tool kit and a puncture repair kit.

These supplies can help you handle minor problems during the journey.

Motorcycle touring is about more than reaching a destination. It is also about enjoying the journey and the experiences along the way. With proper planning, essential preparations and responsible riding, every kilometer can become a memorable part of your Dashain holiday.
