KATHMANDU: The Ford Mustang GTD Competition has set a new benchmark at the Nurburgring, becoming the fastest street-legal American car on the circuit.

The car recorded a lap time of 6:40.835, which is more than eight seconds quicker than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. This marks Ford’s return to the top after losing the record to Chevrolet.

Earlier, the standard Mustang GTD had set a 6:57 lap in 2024. Ford later improved it to 6:52. However, the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X went faster, with times of 6:50 and 6:49 respectively.

The new Competition version brings major upgrades. It is lighter and more powerful than the standard GTD, which already produces 815 hp from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine. Ford has not disclosed the exact power figure, but confirms it is higher.

Weight reduction plays a key role. The car gets magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats, and revised dampers. Aerodynamic changes include a new rear wing, additional front dive planes, and rear carbon-fiber aero discs.

These updates improve downforce and grip, supported by newly developed tires.

The Nurburgring is a famous motorsport circuit located in western Germany. Opened in 1927, it includes the historic Nordschleife and a modern Grand Prix track. It is widely used for racing, testing, and automotive development.

With this result, Ford has reclaimed the title of fastest American production car at the Nurburgring.
