KATHMANDU: SUVs may dominate global markets, but China’s best-selling car is a compact electric hatchback. The Geely E2 has emerged as the country’s top-selling passenger vehicle, outperforming popular models such as the Tesla Model Y, Xiaomi SU7 and Leapmotor A10.
According to industry estimates, Geely sold around 244,000 units of the E2 in China during the first half of 2026. That compares with approximately 215,000 units of the Tesla Model Y, 182,000 units of the Xiaomi SU7 and 171,000 units of the Leapmotor A10.
Sold under different names, including Geely EX2, Geely Galaxy Xingyuan and Geome Xingyuan, the hatchback has continued the strong sales momentum it established in 2025.
The E2’s biggest strength is its value-for-money proposition. Measuring 4,115 mm in length with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, it offers a spacious cabin while remaining compact enough for city driving.
Pricing has also played a major role in its success. In China, the E2 starts at around USD 9,000, making it more affordable than the BYD Seagull, which starts at around USD 10,320, while costing only slightly more than the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV.
Despite its affordable price, the E2 comes well equipped. Standard features include an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, full-LED lighting, adaptive cruise control, a 375-liter boot, and a 70-liter front trunk.
The hatchback is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor paired with an LFP battery pack. Depending on the variant, it offers a CLTC driving range of up to 345 km or 430 km, making it suitable for daily commuting and urban use.
The combination of competitive pricing, practical size, modern technology and usable driving range has made the Geely E2 one of the most popular EVs in China. It also highlights the growing demand for affordable electric hatchbacks in the world’s largest EV market.
Geely’s best-selling electric hatchback, the Geely E2, is set to launch in Nepal today as the Proton e.MAS 5.
