KATHMANDU: Nepal’s growing EV market is breathing new life into the hatchback segment. After steadily losing momentum since 2022, the segment is now preparing for its biggest competition yet as several new electric hatchbacks get ready to enter the market.

For years, petrol models like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Celerio and Tata Tiago kept the hatchback segment alive. Then came the BYD Dolphin, which changed the market and showed that buyers were ready for electric hatchbacks.

The success of the BYD Atto 1, Tata Tiago EV and Nammi Box has encouraged more brands to enter the segment. The latest entrant is the Proton e.MAS 5, which officially goes on sale in Nepal from July 20.

Among the existing models, the Proton e.MAS 5 is expected to compete most closely with the BYD Atto 1. Although it is slightly larger than the Atto 1, its size puts it closer to the now-discontinued BYD Dolphin.

The competition is set to intensify further at the upcoming NAIMA Mobility Expo, where the ARFOX T-One and Chery QQ3 are expected to make their Nepal debut. Both models are likely to target the premium hatchback EV segment, and their pricing will determine who they compete against.

Updated versions of the Tata Tiago EV and Nammi Box are also expected to arrive around the NADA Auto Show, giving buyers even more choices in the coming months.

As things stand, the biggest battle in Nepal’s electric hatchback market will be between six models: the BYD Atto 1, Tata Tiago EV, Nammi Box, Proton e.MAS 5, ARFOX T-One and Chery QQ3.

The Atto 1, Tiago EV and Nammi Box have already built a strong presence in the market. The question now is whether the new arrivals can challenge them with better value, more features and improved practicality.

Price is expected to be the biggest deciding factor in this segment. Buyers are likely to compare these models based on value for money before making a purchase.

The Tata Tiago EV remains the most affordable option among the current rivals. Its competitive pricing, proven reliability and strong after-sales support have made it a popular choice.

The BYD Atto 1 also sits in the affordable price range. It attracts buyers with BYD’s strong brand image, sporty styling and practical package.

The Nammi Box has gained popularity for its distinctive design, spacious cabin and modern features. With its top variant priced at around Rs. 3.5 million, it continues to offer good value in the segment.

For the Proton e.MAS 5, ARFOX T-One and Chery QQ3, competitive pricing will be the key. If they enter the market with attractive prices while offering better cabin space, modern technology and fresh styling, they could quickly become strong challengers in Nepal’s growing electric hatchback segment.
