Mercedes VLE luxury minivan spied with hybrid powertrain

KATHMANDU: Mercedes-Benz appears to be testing a hybrid version of its new VLE luxury minivan. New spy images by Carscoops show a prototype with features that suggest it is not powered entirely by electricity.

The biggest clue is the conventional radiator grille. Unlike the electric VLE, which has a closed front end, the prototype has a large grille opening to provide cooling for a combustion engine.

The prototype also has two filler flaps, one on each side of the rear section. The electric VLE has only one charging port flap. This suggests that the second flap on the test vehicle is for fuel.

Spy images also appear to show part of an exhaust system underneath the rear floor. Mercedes has not confirmed the engine that could power the hybrid VLE.

However, it could use the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine available in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. The CLA combines the petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. In all-wheel-drive form, the system produces up to 190 PS.

The hybrid VLE would be less powerful than the electric versions. The VLE 300 produces 276 PS, while the VLE 400 delivers 415 PS. The VLE 400 can accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in 6.4 seconds.

Despite the different powertrain, the hybrid VLE is expected to retain the spacious and premium interior of the electric model.

The VLE has a 3,071 mm wheelbase and can accommodate six to eight passengers across three rows. It can also be equipped with Mercedes’ MBUX Superscreen infotainment system.

A premium rear entertainment option includes a 31.3-inch 8K display that folds down from the roof.

Mercedes has yet to officially confirm the hybrid VLE or provide details about its powertrain and launch timeline.
