KATHMANDU: The MG Hector served as the official transport partner for the MeroAuto Ground Reality Chitwan drive. We drove the SUV from Kathmandu to Hetauda, then to Chitwan, before returning to Kathmandu.
The route included highways, steep climbs, descents, rough roads and city traffic, giving us a chance to evaluate the SUV in different driving conditions.
In Nepal, the highest-selling SUV segment is dominated by models measuring between 4.0 and 4.4 meters in length. The MG Hector, however, measures around 4.7 meters.
Despite its larger size, it is priced close to many petrol SUVs in the 4.4-meter segment.

While electric vehicles continue to dominate Nepal’s passenger vehicle market, the Hector remains a compelling option for buyers looking for a petrol-powered family SUV.
Bold road presence
The Hector makes a strong first impression. Its large chrome front grille gives the SUV a commanding appearance. The split LED headlamps and sequential turn indicators improve visibility while adding a premium touch.
The SUV rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, while the chrome window line and large body enhance its road presence. At the rear, the connected LED light bar and redesigned tailgate give the SUV a modern look.
Spacious and premium cabin
The cabin remains one of Hector’s biggest strengths.
A 14-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system dominates the dashboard. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making smartphone connectivity seamless.
MG’s voice command system is another useful feature. Drivers can control the sunroof, air conditioning and several other functions using voice commands, reducing the need to interact with the touchscreen while driving.
The seats are wide and comfortable. Ventilated front seats improve comfort during warmer weather. Rear passengers also benefit from generous legroom, a reclining backrest and an almost flat floor, making long journeys more comfortable for three adults.
Adequate performance for daily driving
The Hector sold in Nepal is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine paired with a CVT automatic transmission. The engine produces 143 PS and 250 Nm of torque.
The SUV feels easy to drive in city traffic. Throttle response is smooth and overtaking at normal speeds is effortless. However, noticeable turbo lag appears during hard acceleration.
Comfortable on the road
The Hector is designed with comfort in mind.
Its soft suspension absorbs road imperfections and speed breakers with ease. Highway stability is reassuring, making long-distance travel comfortable.
There is some body roll during aggressive cornering, while the light steering prioritizes ease of use over sporty handling. Drivers looking for engaging performance may find it less exciting.
For families and long-distance travelers, however, the Hector delivers an impressive balance of ride comfort and refinement. The suspension feels even more composed when carrying passengers and luggage.
Strong on features and safety
The top-spec variant comes equipped with a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, wireless phone charger, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, an Infinity premium audio system, an air purifier and a 360-degree camera.
Safety features include six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and disc brakes on all four wheels.
One of the Hector’s standout features is its Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning make highway driving more convenient and safer.
The system performs well on roads with clear lane markings. However, like most ADAS-equipped vehicles, some functions become less effective on roads where lane markings are faded or absent.
Verdict
The MG Hector is not aimed at buyers seeking sporty performance or dynamic handling.
Its strengths lie in its spacious cabin, comfortable ride, generous equipment list and advanced safety technologies. Buyers looking for a practical family SUV with premium features, modern technology and strong value for money will find the MG Hector to be one of the most compelling options in its segment.
