KATHMANDU: Several MG vehicles sold in international markets are based on platforms and technologies developed by Wuling, another major brand under China’s SAIC Motor group.
According to the company, Wuling has been developing compact vehicles and electric cars for several years. Its platforms and technology are now being used across different brands under the SAIC group.
One of the examples is the MG Comet EV sold in India. The small electric car is based on the same basic architecture as the Wuling Air EV.
The connection is also seen in the latest MG Hector Tomahawk, launched in India in August 2026. The SUV is closely related to the Wuling Eksion, which was launched in Indonesia in April 2026.
The Wuling Eksion was first shown at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) in February. MG has brought the same basic vehicle foundation to India under the Hector name, with changes to its design, technology and positioning.
Another example is the MG Windsor EV. Its basic architecture is shared with the Wuling Cloud EV, which is also sold as the Baojun Yunduo in some markets.
These models show how SAIC is using shared platforms to develop vehicles for different markets. Wuling’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities allow the same basic technology to be adapted for different brands and customers.
The approach also helps SAIC develop new models more quickly while reducing the cost of developing completely new vehicle platforms for every market.
