KATHMANDU: Toyota is preparing to introduce an electric version of its best-selling Corolla, marking a major change for one of the world’s most popular car nameplates.
The Corolla has sold more than 57 million units globally since its launch in 1966. Toyota is now developing a new-generation Corolla with petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.
Toyota first previewed the next-generation Corolla in concept form at the Japan Mobility Show, last year. The new model is expected to feature a sharper design, a more technology-focused interior and an updated platform.
The next-generation Corolla is expected to continue using the TNGA-C architecture. However, Toyota is expected to heavily modify the platform to support different powertrains, including a battery-electric system.
The Corolla EV is expected to be offered with single- and dual-motor configurations. It is also expected to deliver at least 250 miles, or around 400 km, of driving range.
Toyota is expected to offer the new Corolla in several body styles. These could include a sedan, hatchback, crossover and a performance-oriented GR variant.
The hybrid version is expected to use a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The system is expected to produce around 134 horsepower. Toyota is also targeting a 10% to 20% efficiency improvement over the current hybrid system.
The company is also developing a plug-in hybrid Corolla with a larger battery and longer electric driving range.
The next-generation Corolla is expected to make its global debut in 2027 as a 2028 model-year vehicle. Toyota has not yet revealed the pricing or full specifications of the electric version.
According to reports, the petrol version could start at around $25,000, while the hybrid could start at around $27,000. The EV and plug-in hybrid versions are expected to be priced in the $30,000 range.
