KATHMANDU: Citroen has unveiled the 2 CV Concept at the Paris Motor Show, previewing an affordable electric hatchback inspired by its iconic 2CV. The production model is expected by 2028, with a targeted starting price of around $16,800.

The original 2CV was produced between 1948 and 1990, with more than 3.8 million units sold. The new concept revives its classic design as Citroen looks to compete with affordable electric cars from Chinese automakers.

The four-door electric hatchback features several design elements inspired by the original model. These include a ribbed hood, round headlights mounted on raised front fenders and a retractable fabric roof. However, the new concept has a more muscular appearance, with wider tracks and 19-inch wheels.

Measuring 3.76 meters long, the concept is around 20 cm shorter than the original 2CV. Its compact size is designed to make city driving and parking easier while helping keep production costs low.

Removable seats and egg storage

The interior combines a simple layout with practical features. The bench seats can be removed for outdoor use, while a portable storage basket serves as a center console. The doors also feature built-in egg storage, paying tribute to the original 2CV’s design brief, which called for a car capable of carrying a basket of eggs across rough fields without breaking them.

Other retro-inspired details include a single-spoke steering wheel and a gear selector mounted beneath the dashboard. However, the new model uses an electric drivetrain instead of the original car’s air-cooled, two-cylinder engine and four-speed manual transmission.

Citroen has not disclosed the motor output, battery capacity or driving range. Its targeted price of $16,800 suggests that the production model will focus on affordable urban mobility rather than high performance or long-distance travel.

The Renault Twingo could provide a reference point for its performance. The entry-level electric Twingo produces 60 kW (81 hp) and offers a claimed range of 262 km.

Citroen is expected to reveal more details ahead of the production model’s planned global debut at the 2028 Paris Motor Show.
