Chinese vehicle supply disruptions delay Dashain deliveries in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Floods and landslides along Nepal’s trade routes with China have disrupted vehicle imports, delaying deliveries for customers who booked cars during the NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo and NADA Auto Show.

Automobile dealers estimate that around 4,000 electric cars were booked during the two events. However, fewer than 1,000 units had reportedly been imported by the time of reporting, leaving many customers uncertain about delivery before Dashain.

Some vehicles were reportedly swept away by floods near customs points, while others remained delayed in transit or have yet to reach Kathmandu.

The affected bookings include several Chinese brands and models, including the Chery Q, ARCFOX T1, Wuling Eksion, Hongqi E-HS4, Jaecoo J5 Pro, BYD Atto 2 Essential, BAIC BJ30e, Nammi Vigo E2 and Leapmotor B03X. These models attracted buyers through new launches, competitive pricing and growing interest in electric vehicles.

The delays have created uncertainty for customers hoping to take delivery before the festival. A buyer who booked a Nammi Vigo said nearly two months had passed without a confirmed delivery date.

“I booked the vehicle almost two months ago, but the road problem has not been resolved. I have almost lost hope of getting it before Dashain,” the customer said.

A Lalitpur-based businessman who booked a BYD Atto 2 reported a similar experience, saying transport disruptions had prevented the vehicle from arriving. Another customer waiting for an ARCFOX model said delivery was delayed after floods in Bhotekoshi swept away vehicles from the brand’s first shipment.

Dashain is a peak period for vehicle purchases in Nepal. With delivery schedules uncertain, some customers are considering other brands available in stock or turning to the reconditioned vehicle market.

Importers say the shift could affect sales even after transport routes reopen. Customers who purchase alternatives before Dashain may not return to their original bookings once supplies resume.

A large volume of vehicles arriving after the festival could also increase inventory pressure on dealers. Importers may need to compete more aggressively through pricing, financing facilities, exchange offers and other sales incentives to attract buyers and secure new bookings.
