KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has revised its regulations regarding motor vehicle imports.

Issuing a directive to licensed banks and financial institutions on Thursday, the central bank prohibited the import of vehicles that do not meet the new emission standards prescribed by the government.

The decision comes following an amendment to the foreign exchange directive which aligns with the newly enforced Nepal Vehicle Emission Standard, 2025. Under the revised guidelines, vehicles that do not comply with this standard will no longer be allowed to be imported.

“Imports of reconditioned, used or any vehicles, including cargo vehicles, that fall outside the scope of the Nepal Vehicle Emission Standard, 2025, will not be permitted,” the NRB said in its directive

The Ministry of Forests and Environment enforced the Euro-5 standard for two-wheelers and Euro-6 for four-wheelers from June 23.
