KATHMANDU: Chinese automakers have long partnered with leading American and European brands to strengthen their global presence. As China’s auto market expanded, many international companies entered through joint ventures with local firms.
Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd. (BAIC) is one of the major state-owned car manufacturers in China. The company is fully backed by the Chinese government and has a strong presence across multiple segments.
BAIC is widely known for its off-road SUV lineup. Established in 1953, the company initially collaborated with Jeep to develop rugged vehicles. Although that partnership ended, BAIC continues joint ventures with Hyundai Motor Company and Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz remains one of the most successful luxury brands in China.
BAIC also operates its own premium brand Stelato and mass-market EV brand Arcfox.The company is now preparing to enter the Nepali market under the Laxmi Group. Sales are expected to begin within the next two months.
The first model confirmed for Nepal is the BAIC BJ30. It is designed for both urban and off-road use. The model was showcased to Nepali stakeholders during a recent plant visit.
According to the company, the BJ30 uses a Magic Core hybrid system. It claims a range of up to 1,000 km on 51 liters of fuel.
The SUV offers strong off-road capability. It comes with 215 mm ground clearance. The approach angle is 25 degrees and the departure angle is 30 degrees, making it suitable for rough terrain.
BAIC has equipped the BJ30 with multiple off-road assist features. The instrument cluster displays slope angle, pitch, altitude, air pressure, and compass data. It also includes a wading mode, which shows real-time water depth while driving through water.
For driving performance, features include slow start, fast start, low-speed control, and regenerative braking.
Inside, the SUV gets a boxy design with a feature-loaded cabin. It includes a 14.6-inch touchscreen, 8 speakers, wireless charging, and premium leather seats.
On the safety side, the BJ30 offers 8 airbags, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, and ADAS features. These systems are designed to improve both safety and driving convenience.
