KATHMANDU: BMW is preparing to launch a new entry-level electric vehicle in 2028. The new model will be the most affordable EV based on the company’s Neue Klasse platform.

BMW confirmed the plan during its Capital Markets Day on Wednesday. The company said the new fully electric model will strengthen its presence in the high-volume entry segment, with a focus on Europe.

The new EV will use technologies introduced in other Neue Klasse models, including the new iX3 SUV and i3 sedan. BMW has not revealed further details about the upcoming model.

According to reports from BMWBlog citing company insiders, the new EV is internally codenamed “NBO” and is expected to be a five-door hatchback. It is likely to be called the i1.

The i1 is expected to be sold alongside the petrol-powered 1 Series. Although it may share similar styling, the electric model will use the Neue Klasse platform.

The new EV will sit between the MINI Cooper Electric and BMW’s iX1 or iX2 in the European lineup. Entry-level versions are expected to use rear-wheel drive, while higher-spec xDrive versions could get all-wheel drive.

BMW is also reportedly considering an i2 electric sedan based on the i1, which could arrive around 2030. However, BMW has not officially announced the model.

The i1 will primarily target the European market. BMW is also expected to face growing competition from other luxury brands, including Audi and Mercedes-Benz, as they expand into more affordable EV segments.

BMW opened orders for the new 2027 i3 sedan this week, with prices starting at $61,500 in the US. The new i3 is based on the Neue Klasse platform and shares the same starting price as the new iX3 SUV.
