KATHMANDU: Chinese automaker FAW Hongqi has developed a new solar sunroof that can generate up to 400 kWh of electricity annually.
The company has integrated perovskite photovoltaic (PV) technology into the panoramic sunroof of the Hongqi EHS7 electric SUV. The prototype can generate around 300 watts of power under sufficient sunlight.
Unlike conventional solar panels that use crystalline silicon, Hongqi’s system uses perovskite material. It is thinner, lighter and more flexible, making it easier to integrate into a vehicle’s curved glass roof.
Hongqi said the solar roof can generate enough electricity to support low-voltage systems in the vehicle. These include air conditioning, refrigerators and the vehicle’s security or sentry mode.
The technology was developed at Hongqi’s research and development center. The prototype was fitted to the Hongqi EHS7, which is sold in China as the Hongqi Tiangong 08.
Hongqi plans to expand the technology to other parts of its electric vehicles in the future. The company is considering installing perovskite solar cells on areas such as the hood.
With solar panels covering more parts of the vehicle, Hongqi estimates that future models could generate up to 10 kWh of electricity per day. The company says this could provide enough energy for up to 80 km of daily driving.
However, Hongqi has not announced when the solar technology will enter mass production.
Hongqi has entered the Nepali market through the NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo 2026. The brand has introduced its electric crossover SUV, the Hongqi EHS4, in Nepal.
