KATHMANDU: Insurance companies have received claims amounting to nearly Rs 1 billion for losses caused by flooding in the Lhende Khola River in Rasuwagadi on the Nepal-China border last month.

According to the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA)—the insurance sector regulator, claims totaling Rs 985.98 million had been filed as of August 7.

Of this amount, Rs 91.35 million in claims are related to damages to 58 vehicles under motor insurance.

So far, claims worth Rs 35.55 million have been made for 42 public vehicles and Rs 55.9 million for 16 private vehicles.

The flood swept away 35 electric vehicles (EVs), 24 cargo containers, and six cargo trucks. Since these EVs had not cleared customs, they were not covered by motor insurance but by marine insurance.

Claims totaling Rs 220.04 million have been received under marine insurance, according to the NIA.
