KATHMANDU : McLaren has unveiled the McL 6GT, a new limited-production supercar inspired by the brand’s early road-car history. The model will be the first McLaren to feature a manual gearbox since the iconic F1, according to Autocar.
The McL 6GT was revealed at Monterey Car Week in California. McLaren plans to put the production version on sale in 2028. It will be positioned as the first model in a new line of highly exclusive cars outside the brand’s core lineup.
The new supercar pays tribute to the M6GT, a road car project developed by McLaren founder Bruce McLaren in the late 1960s. The original M6GT was intended to bring McLaren’s racing technology to the road but never entered full production.
The McL 6GT features a lightweight carbon-fibre structure and bodywork. Its design takes inspiration from the M6GT and the M6A Can-Am racing car. It gets a low-slung profile, a distinctive Kamm-style rear and several details inspired by Bruce McLaren’s original road car.
Power comes from a V8 engine that drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. McLaren has not yet disclosed the engine’s power and performance figures.
The manual transmission is the biggest highlight of the McL 6GT. The last McLaren road car with a manual gearbox was the F1, launched in 1992.
McLaren has focused heavily on driver engagement with the new model. It features hydraulic steering, tactile physical controls and visible mechanical components. The company says the car is designed to offer a more direct and mechanical driving experience.
The car also carries several references to Bruce McLaren. His signature is featured in the engine bay, while the historic Speedy Kiwi logo appears on the fuel filler cap and other parts of the car.
McLaren is expected to reveal more details about the McL 6GT ahead of its production in 2028. The model is expected to be produced in limited numbers and positioned above the company’s regular sports car lineup.
