KATHMANDU: Government employees in Nepal could receive up to Rs 140,000 annually for vehicle fuel under a proposed government directive.
The provision is included in the draft of the Vehicle Management Directive for Government Employees, 2083. The proposal sets fuel and vehicle maintenance allowances according to employees’ positions and levels.
Under the draft, the chief secretary, secretaries and 12th-level officials would receive Rs 140,000 annually for fuel and Rs 100,000 for vehicle maintenance.
Similarly, joint secretaries and 11th-level officials would be eligible for Rs 120,000 in annual fuel expenses and Rs 75,000 for maintenance.
Under-secretaries and officials at the ninth and 10th levels would receive Rs 100,000 for fuel and Rs 50,000 for maintenance each year.
Section officers and officials at the sixth to eighth levels would be eligible for Rs 40,000 in annual fuel expenses and Rs 15,000 for maintenance.
For non-gazetted and assistant-level employees, the draft proposes an annual fuel allowance of Rs 25,000 and maintenance support of Rs 10,000.
The proposed directive also includes a loan facility for government employees to purchase vehicles. The loan amount would range from Rs 200,000 to Rs 6 million, depending on the employee’s position.
The chief secretary, secretaries and joint secretaries, or officials of equivalent rank, would be allowed to hire a driver or drive their vehicles themselves. Those who choose to drive themselves would receive an amount equivalent to the starting salary of a driver, according to the proposal.
Employees who do not join the proposed scheme would use vehicles available at their offices on a shared basis.
The provisions are part of a draft directive and will come into effect only after approval by the Council of Ministers.
