KATHMANDU: Tesla has revealed a new active rear wing design that could be used on its next-generation Roadster. The wing can stay hidden inside the rear bodywork but can produce up to 700 kg of downforce when fully deployed.
The details come from a new Tesla patent published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The patent shows a two-part wing that sits flat with the rear deck when it is not being used.
The wing can rise and move backward in less than three seconds. It can also change its angle in less than a quarter of a second.
Tesla says the wing can produce up to 700 kg of downforce at speeds above 100 mph. This can help keep the car stable at high speeds and during fast cornering.
The system can automatically adjust the wing based on the car’s speed, steering, braking and other inputs. It can reduce the wing angle on straight roads and increase downforce while braking or cornering.
Tesla has also designed the system with safety in mind. If the car detects a possible rear-end crash, the wing can retract. It can also fold back if a strong impact occurs.
The patent drawings show a low, sporty 2+2 car that looks similar to the upcoming Tesla Roadster. Tesla has not confirmed that this exact wing will be used on the production model.
The new Roadster is scheduled to be unveiled on October 1 in Texas.
