KATHMANDU: Horse Powertrain has unveiled a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that can continue running while fully submerged in water. The B20 engine is designed for hybrid and off-road vehicles.
The engine can operate underwater at depths of up to 1.1 meters. It meets IPX8 waterproofing standards and is aimed at HEVs, PHEVs and range-extender EVs.
The four-cylinder engine produces between 188 hp and 248 hp, depending on the version. Torque ranges from 300 Nm to 380 Nm. It weighs around 130 kg.
Horse has sealed the engine’s electrical components and sensors to protect them from water. It also uses additional sealing between the engine and transmission.
The engine can detect when it is submerged. Its control system can then adjust throttle response or limit power depending on the conditions.
The B20 is also designed for steep off-road driving. Horse says it can handle a 100-percent grade, equivalent to a 45-degree incline.
The engine uses a Miller-cycle combustion system with direct injection, specially designed pistons and high-tumble intake ports. It claims thermal efficiency of up to 48.4 percent.
An active dual-cooling system helps control temperatures during prolonged climbing and other high-load conditions.
Horse Powertrain was established by Renault and Geely in 2024. The B20 was first shown at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year.
The engine has already entered production use in China. It is fitted to the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 as part of a plug-in hybrid system paired with Horse’s three-speed hybrid transmission.
