KATHMANDU: Rain has already started in Kathmandu, with cloudy and rainy weather reported across much of Nepal. A deep low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal is likely to weaken within the next 24 hours.
However, the system could still bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to some districts of Nepal. The rainfall may affect normal life and increase the risk of floods, landslides, inundation and mudslides.
Meteorologists have urged people to remain on high alert and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly at night, in areas vulnerable to floods and landslides.
Heavy rain could also disrupt major highways as landslides and floods may block roads or damage road sections. Authorities have advised people to check road conditions and avoid traveling through high-risk areas.
The BP Highway is among the routes facing increased risk. Authorities in Kavrepalanchok have restricted vehicle movement on a section of the highway at night due to the potential risk of floods and landslides. Construction work on the under-construction section has also been postponed for a few days.
Air travel could also be affected by heavy rainfall and poor visibility. The Airline Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) has directed its member helicopter companies to keep aircraft on standby for possible rescue and emergency operations.
People have been advised to follow weather updates and take necessary precautions as the effects of the system continue.
