KATHMANDU: BYD is preparing a major update for its small electric hatchback, known as the Seagull in China and sold as the Atto 1 in Nepal and several international markets. The second-generation model has been shown in China with several major changes, including a new rear-wheel-drive layout, according to Autohome.
The new Atto 1 moves its electric motor from the front axle to the rear. This change also creates space under the front hood for a front trunk, or trunk.
The first-generation model uses a 55 kW front-mounted motor. The new model gets a 95 kW motor, producing around 127 hp. Its top speed has also increased to 150 km/h.
Another major change is the rear suspension. The outgoing model uses a torsion-beam setup, while the new Atto 1 gets an independent multi-link rear suspension.
The new model also gets wider 205/60 R16 tires with 16-inch alloy wheels. The current model uses narrower 165 mm and 175 mm tires.
Inside, the redesigned cabin gets a floating central touchscreen and a flat-bottom, two-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Physical toggle switches are placed below the air vents, while the center console includes a wireless phone charger and two vertically arranged cupholders.
The new Atto 1 also gets semi-hidden mechanical door handles instead of the flush-type pop-out handles used on the current model. At the rear, it features split taillights, a large roof spoiler and a lower diffuser.
An optional roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is also expected to be available. It supports BYD’s DiPilot 300, also known as God’s Eye B, Level 2 driver-assistance system.
The second-generation Atto 1 measures 4,205 mm long and has a 2,650 mm wheelbase. It also gets rear-wheel drive, independent rear suspension and a front trunk.
There have also been reports that higher variants could get BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology. However, BYD has not officially confirmed the charging specifications or charging time.
In Nepal, BYD is officially distributed by Cimex Inc. The company has not yet announced when the updated Atto 1 will arrive in the Nepali market.
