KATHMANDU: Yamaha could be preparing to enter the 200cc super sport segment with a new model tentatively called the YZF-R2, after filing a trademark for the name in India.

At present, Yamaha does not offer a direct rival to the KTM RC200. The proposed YZF-R2 is expected to fill that gap and could be positioned between the YZF-R15 and the larger, more expensive YZF-R3.

Reports suggest the YZF-R2 may use a 200cc, single-cylinder engine, likely developed from Yamaha’s existing 155cc motor that produces 18.1 BHP and 14.2 Nm. With the increased capacity, higher power and torque figures are expected.

However, Yamaha has not officially confirmed the model, its specifications, or its launch timeline. It is also unclear whether the R15 would continue alongside the R2 or be phased out if the new bike enters production.

For now, the trademark filing is the only indication of Yamaha’s possible plans, and the company has yet to make any formal announcement about entering the 200cc super sport category.
