Five things to check before buying a hatchback

KATHMANDU: The hatchback car segment remains active in Nepal. Models like the Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and Celerio once dominated the market.

Petrol hatchbacks became expensive due to high taxes and offered limited features. The entry of electric vehicles has changed this trend. Today, more features are available at lower prices in the hatchback segment.

Several brands now sell hatchbacks in Nepal. Options include the Tata Tiago EV, Wuling Bingo, Nammi 01, BYD Atto 1, BYD Dolphin, Kaiyi e-Qute 02, and Leapmotor T03.

EV hatchbacks start at around Rs. 2.5 million. Petrol models like the Hyundai i10 Nios, Maruti Celerio, and Swift are still available at slightly higher prices.

With many options available, choosing the right hatchback can be confusing. These five key points can help simplify the decision. The right hatchback should match your daily needs, budget, and long-term ownership plans. Checking these areas carefully makes the selection easier and more practical.

  1. Safety

Check the number of airbags. Look for ESC, hill-hold assist, TPMS, and ISOFIX mounts. Rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera add value. ADAS features and good NCAP crash test scores are important.

  1. Connectivity features

Modern cars are tech-focused. A large touchscreen is essential. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay should be available. Wireless connectivity is a plus. Digital instrument clusters, premium audio, wireless charging, and connected car tech improve daily use.

  1. Comfort and ease of driving

Avoid missing features that may cause regret later. Automatic climate control is useful. Features like adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, push-button start, rear AC vents, and height-adjustable driver seats improve comfort. Ambient lighting adds a premium feel.

  1. Low running cost

Running cost matters. For petrol cars, aim for at least 20 km/l mileage. For EVs, a range of 250–350 km is ideal. Check suspension quality. Multiple driving modes help. Ground clearance should suit Nepali roads.

  1. Easy to use and practical

A hatchback should be easy to use. Foldable rear seats are important. Boot space of around 300 liters is recommended. Good legroom and headroom matter. Always check build quality and brand reliability.
