KATHMANDU: Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com is partnering with battery maker CATL’s subsidiary Era Electric Service and automaker GAC Group to launch a new electric car called the “National Good Car.”

The model will be based on the GAC Aion UT and will come with a battery-swapping feature. It will be sold only through JD.com’s online platform.

Public test drives will start at the end of October, while the official launch is set for November 9, just before JD.com’s annual 11.11 shopping festival.

According to JD.com, the company will not take part in vehicle manufacturing. Instead, it will use its consumer data and e-commerce expertise to enhance the customer experience and manage online sales.

The partnership brings together JD.com’s e-commerce reach, CATL’s battery technology and GAC’s car manufacturing expertise. It aims to make electric cars more accessible to Chinese buyers through an online-first approach, according to Chinese media reports.
