KATHMANDU: Dashain, once the busiest season for car sales, has ended with a sharp decline this year. Dealers say the Gen Z movement that began before the festival disrupted the entire automobile market.

Companies that had delivered nearly 1,000 vehicles during Dashain last year managed to sell only 200–300 units this time. Road blockages caused by landslides also delayed vehicle imports from China, while overall economic uncertainty kept buyers from making big purchases.

Still, small vehicles booked during the Naima Mobility Expo and NADA Auto Show were gradually delivered during the festival. According to industry sources, cars from BYD, Hyundai, MG, Tata, Deepal and Omoda/Jaecoo performed relatively better, with six models standing out in sales.

BYD Atto 1 and Atto 2

BYD’s new Atto 1 hatchback and Atto 2 SUV drew major attention at both the Naima and NADA shows. Despite arriving in Nepal only hours before Dashain, distributor Cimex Inc. opened its showrooms during the Dashain holidays to deliver vehicles.

The company imported over 500 units of the two models but has not disclosed exact delivery figures. With strong pricing and modern design, both Atto 1 and Atto 2 were among the most popular vehicles of the season.

Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta, available in both petrol and electric variants, continued its dominance in the compact SUV segment. Dealers estimate that around 300 units combining both EV and petrol versions, were sold nationwide during Dashain.Introduced in 2017, the Creta remains the top choice for those seeking a reliable petrol SUV, which helped boost its festive sales this year.

Deepal S05

MAW Vriddhi, the authorized distributor of Changan Automobile Group, introduced the Deepal S05 ahead of Dashain. Manufactured in Thailand, it entered Nepal even when EV imports from China were restricted

Around 180 units were handed over to customers during Dashain and about 200 units have hit the roads within two months of launch. The Deepal S05 gained traction due to its premium design, solid performance and competitive pricing, with the top variant priced at Rs 5.499 million.

Jaecoo J5

Known among enthusiasts as the “Mini Range Rover,” the Jaecoo J5 became the first EV to arrive through the Korala border. With high ground clearance, clean styling and a 155 kW motor, it quickly attracted buyers.According to SPG Automobile, around 100 units were delivered before Dashain, marking a strong debut for the brand.

MG S5

The MG S5 maintained good sales momentum during Dashain despite no new imports in recent months. Stocks available since earlier shipments helped meet demand.

Launched in March 2025, over 1,050 units have been imported so far. Distributed by Paramount Motors, the S5 continues to perform well in the mid-size electric SUV segment.
