KATHMANDU: BMW iX5 Hydrogen is set to get major upgrades in its next generation. BMW is focusing on improving range and efficiency.
The new model will use a flat hydrogen storage system. This setup fits into the floor and saves interior space. It also increases fuel capacity.
The new tank can store over 7 kg of hydrogen, up from 6 kg in the current model. BMW claims a range of around 750 km on a full tank. Refueling takes less than five minutes.
New technology
The system uses seven carbon-fiber reinforced chambers combined into one unit. These are rated at 700 bar pressure.
The tank layout is similar in size to BMW’s upcoming 800V battery packs. This allows multiple powertrain options on the same production line.
The next-gen X5, codenamed G65, will offer multiple powertrains. These include petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and hydrogen.

The hydrogen version uses a new Gen 3 fuel cell system. It is being co-developed with Toyota.
BMW says the new system is more powerful and efficient than before. Production models of the hydrogen-powered iX5 are expected to arrive around 2028.
