KATHMANDU: BMW has announced a global recall covering around 575,000 vehicles due to a potential fire risk linked to the starter system.

According to reports from German media, the issue was identified through internal inspections and customer complaints. The recall affects multiple BMW model lines worldwide. In Germany alone, 28,582 vehicles are affected.

BMW stated that wear in the starter motor’s magnetic switch can increase over time, especially after a high number of start cycles. This may initially cause difficulty in starting the engine or a no-start condition.

In rare cases, metal abrasion inside the magnetic switch can lead to a short circuit. This can cause overheating at the starter motor and increase the risk of a vehicle fire, even while driving.

Affected models include the BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series, X3, X4, X5, and X6.

BMW will replace the starter motor in affected vehicles. In some cases, the battery may also be replaced. As a precaution, owners are advised not to leave their vehicles running unattended after starting.

BMW customers are advised to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the official recall portal in their respective markets and schedule a service appointment if required.

BMW cars are officially sold in Nepal through Laxmi Premium Motors, the authorized importer and distributor for BMW automobiles.
