KATHMANDU: Chinese new energy vehicle giant BYD is rapidly advancing vehicle technology and engineering. The company has now introduced a system that allows its SUVs to continue driving even with only three wheels on the ground.
The feature has been introduced in the 2026 Fangchengbao Bao 5 and Bao 8 SUVs. Both models are equipped with BYD’s new ‘Disus-P Ultra’ suspension system along with 1000-volt flash charging technology.
The Disus-P Ultra suspension can adjust body height by up to 200 mm and lift loads of up to 9 tons. The system can raise individual wheels to help the vehicle get out of difficult off-road situations.
It also allows drivers to lift one wheel in the air for a tire change without using a jack. The suspension can hold the vehicle in that position for up to three minutes.
According to BYD, the SUVs can also continue moving using only three wheels. This can be useful during tire blowouts or extreme off-road driving on narrow trails.
The company said the system has been tested to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 85 degrees Celsius. BYD has also equipped the Bao 5 and Bao 8 with its latest 1000-volt flash charging technology.
The company first introduced the system in its ‘Tai’ series and is now expanding it to more models.
The flash charging system supports 10C charging and can charge the battery from 10 percent to 70 percent in just five minutes. It can reach up to 97 percent charge in around nine minutes.
BYD launched the flash charging technology in March 2026 and has been gradually introducing it across different models since then. The company also plans to install around 20,000 units of 1000-volt flash chargers across China by the end of 2026.
