KATHMANDU: China has announced plans to speed up development of solid-state batteries and Level 3 autonomous driving under its 2026 New Energy Vehicle (NEV) strategy.

The plan was outlined by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) after an inter-ministerial meeting held in Beijing on January 13. The meeting focused on energy conservation and NEV industry growth.

The government said 2026 will mark the start of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan. Officials described the coming period as a major growth phase for intelligent and connected NEVs.

MIIT has identified all-solid-state batteries as a key strategic technology. Chinese companies such as Dongfeng, SAIC, Chery, and Sunwoda are moving from lab research to pilot production.

These batteries target energy densities of 350 to 600 Wh/kg. Expected driving range is 1,000 to 1,300 km. Several firms are setting up pilot lines and planning GWh-scale production.

The goal is higher energy density, longer battery life, and stronger domestic supply chains.

China is also advancing Level 3 autonomous driving. Automakers including BYD, Xpeng, Li Auto, Changan Deepal, and Arcfox have received L3 testing permits.

Pilot operations are underway on approved roads. MIIT has allowed limited market access for the first batch of L3 vehicles. Controlled commercial use is expected to begin in 2026.

The government will continue measures to expand vehicle consumption. These include trade-in programs, promotion of electric heavy trucks, and reforms in NEV insurance.

Authorities also stressed fair competition, price monitoring, and stricter quality inspections.

China said it will support international trade and technology cooperation. At the same time, it will guide companies towards orderly and secure global expansion.
