KATHMANDU: Chinese automaker BYD has achieved another major milestone in new energy vehicle (NEV) production, rolling out its 17 millionth NEV.

The milestone vehicle is the BYD Sealion 08, which rolled off the production line as the company’s 17 millionth new energy vehicle.

BYD reached the new milestone just 82 days after producing its 16 millionth NEV. In other words, the company manufactured an additional one million NEVs in less than three months, highlighting its rapidly expanding production capacity.

For comparison, BYD took 120 days to increase production from 15 million to 16 million units. The company built its first NEV in December 2008, but it took nearly 12.5 years to reach its first one million vehicles, a milestone achieved in May 2021.

Since then, production has accelerated dramatically. BYD produced its 10 millionth NEV in November 2024 and has now surpassed 17 million units within less than two years.

Today, BYD manufactures both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) under its Ocean, Dynasty, Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang brands.

The company also continued its strong sales momentum in June 2026, delivering 403,472 NEVs globally, up 5.46 percent compared to the same month last year.

In Nepal, BYD remains the country’s best-selling electric vehicle brand. Its official distributor, Cimex Inc., currently offers more than half a dozen BYD models in the local market.
