KATHMANDU: Vehicle owners and drivers who fail to pay traffic fines may no longer be able to access services provided by transport offices.
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has written to the Department of Transport Management requesting that services be suspended for drivers and vehicle owners with unpaid fines.
If implemented, those with outstanding fines will not be able to access services such as vehicle ownership transfer, driver’s license renewal, blue book renewal and road permit issuance.
According to Naresh Raj Subedi, more than 261,000 drivers and vehicle owners have failed to clear their fines despite being penalized by traffic police.
He said the details of all unpaid fines recorded since the introduction of the e-challan (receipt) system have been forwarded to the department for further action.
“The trend of violating traffic rules is increasing, while many offenders are not paying fines even years after being penalized,” Subedi told MeroAuto. “We have sent details of more than 261,000 such cases to the department to stop transport-related services until the dues are cleared.”
The outstanding amount yet to be collected is estimated to be around Rs 200 million. Traffic authorities said services will be restored after the fines are paid.
