KATHMANDU: The quota system for obtaining driving licenses has been reintroduced as transport offices continue to face problems with the new online licensing system.
The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) introduced the new Electronic Driving License and Vehicle Registration System (EDLVRS) on July 17. However, technical problems with the system have not been fully resolved.
As a result, transport management offices have started limiting the number of applicants they can process each day.
The Transport Management Office, Radhe Radhe, has announced a daily quota for driving license services starting Tuesday. The office said it cannot provide services to all applicants while problems with the department’s system persist.
Jeevan Kumar Basnet, information officer at the office, said the office will conduct written driving license tests for 50 applicants per day starting Tuesday.
He said the quota has been introduced because the department’s new online system is still not operating fully. More than 3,200 applications have already been received at the Radhe Radhe office.
“The problems in the department’s new EDLVRS have not been completely resolved. More than 3,200 license applications have already been received at our office,” Basnet told Meroauto. “We cannot provide services to everyone at once, and the system is not fully operational. Therefore, a daily quota of 50 has been set to manage applicants and make the process easier. We will gradually increase the quota.”
According to the office, services have been provided partially since July 6 despite continued technical issues with the new system. Applications for new licenses and category additions are currently being processed through office verification on a sequential basis.
Applicants whose applications have completed office verification can pay the required revenue online and select their written and practical test dates from August 18, the office said.
The quota system will be removed once the department’s online licensing system becomes fully operational, according to the office.
