KATHMANDU : Mazda’s second best-selling SUV, the CX-30, will not get a new generation until 2031. The company has confirmed that the next-generation model is planned for fiscal year 2030, which runs until March 2031.

The current Mazda CX-30 was introduced in 2019. By the time the new generation arrives, the crossover will have spent around 12 years on the market.

The CX-30 sits between the smaller CX-3 and larger CX-5 in Mazda’s SUV lineup. Despite its age, the model remains popular. It was Mazda’s second best-selling vehicle globally in 2025, behind the CX-5, with 208,869 units sold.

Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro said the company will focus heavily on cost reduction while developing the next CX-30. The approach will be similar to the latest CX-5.

The new CX-5 has already reduced body steel weight by around 10 percent despite being 115 mm longer than its predecessor. Mazda is expected to apply similar cost-saving measures to the next CX-30.

Details about its platform have not been confirmed. However, the next CX-30 could retain a front-wheel-drive layout and share its architecture with the next-generation Mazda3.

The new CX-30 is also expected to use Mazda’s upcoming Skyactiv-Z gasoline engine and an in-house self-charging hybrid system. The hybrid system is scheduled to debut in the CX-5 in 2027.

Mazda is delaying the redesign as it faces rising costs and difficult market conditions. The company is dealing with higher raw material prices, economic uncertainty and increased US tariffs on vehicles built in Japan.
