KATHMANDU: Hyundai Motor Company is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in India with a new entry-level electric SUV, which is expected to be named the Ioniq P. The upcoming model, internally code-named HE1i, is expected to enter the Indian market in January 2027.
The name Ioniq P was mentioned during Hyundai’s third-quarter 2026 earnings conference call with analysts on October 29. The company indicated that the model would be introduced in India following the launch of the Bayon.
However, Hyundai Motor India has yet to officially confirm the name or establish its connection with the HE1i project. According to Hyundai Motor India, the upcoming model will play a key role in the company’s electric mobility strategy.
The Ioniq P is expected to use Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) platform, which also underpins the globally available Inster EV. The vehicle is likely to be offered with two battery options targeting standard-range and long-range customers.
The upcoming EV will initially use imported battery cells. In terms of technology, the electric SUV is expected to feature a next-generation infotainment system, potentially based on Hyundai’s Pleos Connect platform. It will also come with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
The vehicle will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu, India. Upon launch, it will compete with the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV.
India’s electric passenger vehicle sales have increased by nearly 90 percent in FY2027, highlighting the growing demand for electric mobility.
