KATHMANDU: Indian carmakers are shifting their focus firmly towards electric vehicles, with five new small and compact EV models set to enter the market soon.
The push comes as fuel prices climb due to the Middle East conflict, pushing EV sales sharply higher across India. Most companies have doubled their EV sales compared to last year.
With demand rising, automakers are now turning attention to affordable, compact EVs, a segment long overshadowed by premium electric models. Hyundai, Tata, Renault, VinFast, and Maruti Suzuki are among the brands preparing new launches.

Hyundai plans to launch an SUV smaller than the Creta by November or December this year, although the name has not been announced yet. Official sales are expected to begin in February 2027.
Developed locally in India, the new Hyundai SUV will feature a boxy design, a 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen. It will come with two battery options, including an LFP variant.
Tata is preparing to launch the next-generation Nexon by mid-2027, featuring a completely new design and improved build quality.

French automaker Renault will also launch its Bridger SUV in India in the coming months, offered in petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrain options.
The VinFast VF X, a compact SUV from the Vietnamese company, has been designed for budget-conscious buyers and is expected to be a good fit for the Nepali market as well.
Maruti Suzuki is also preparing to launch a small electric car in the A-segment category, which will compete directly with the Tata Tiago EV.
