KATHMANDU: Several major highways connecting Kathmandu with different parts of the country have been disrupted following continuous rainfall.
The Muglin-Narayangadh road section has been closed indefinitely after landslides occurred at several locations. The District Administration Office, Chitwan, said landslides are continuing in different places and efforts are underway to clear the road.
The road will remain closed until further notice. Authorities have urged travelers to plan their journeys accordingly.
The Prithvi Highway, a major route connecting Kathmandu with the rest of the country, has also been blocked by landslides.
More than half a dozen landslides have been reported along the highway. Seven landslides have occurred in Dhading district alone, according to the District Police Office, Dhading.
The affected locations include Krishnabhir, Parewabhir, Kameribhir, Jyamireghat, Tigrang Khola, Jahare and Jawang Khola.
A gabion wall built for road safety at Krishnabhir along the Prithvi Highway has collapsed, according to Nepal Police. A section of the gabion wall supporting the old road has fallen downhill, putting the newly constructed track at Krishnabhir at risk.
Continuous rainfall has made it difficult to clear the landslides. Two pieces of equipment are currently being used to clear the landslide at Krishnabhir.
The BP Highway has also been fully obstructed by landslides, debris and road damage caused by the Roshi River.
Vehicles have been held at Dhulikhel Chowk following the disruption.
Landslides have blocked the highway at Chowkidanda in Namobuddha-6, Charaybesi in Roshi-7, Gimdibesi in Roshi-8 and Mamti in Roshi-11. The Roshi River has also damaged the road diversion at Chowkidanda.
As rainfall continues, authorities expect road clearance work to take time. Police have urged travelers to check the road conditions before starting their journey.
The Kantipath Highway, which connects Kathmandu with Hetauda, has also been completely blocked on the Lalitpur side.
Landslides have occurred at Panchdhure, Payangdhur and Tikabhairav, according to Lalitpur police. Police said efforts are underway to clear the landslides and reopen the road.
