KATHMANDU: Separate operating hours have been set for vehicles using the BP Highway, the shortest road link connecting Kathmandu with the eastern Terai.

The District Administration Office, Sindhuli, introduced the new schedule to reduce traffic congestion and road accidents and facilitate the transportation of relief materials.

According to the administration, private and public passenger vehicles will be allowed to operate on the BP Highway from 4:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Similarly, cargo and goods-carrying vehicles will be allowed to operate from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am.

The administration has also restricted the operation of heavy cargo vehicles carrying more than 10 tons due to the current physical condition of the highway and road safety concerns.

Vehicles exceeding the prescribed weight limit will not be allowed to use the route.

Traffic pressure on the BP Highway has increased after the Prithvi Highway was disrupted by a major flood in Bhotekoshi on 26 August.

The separate operating hours are intended to help manage the increased traffic while maintaining safer movement along the highway.
