KATHMANDU: The MG S5 has emerged as the segment leader in Nepal’s compact SUV market in 2025, crossing over 1,000 units in imports within less than a year of launch.

In a segment where the BYD Atto 2 has also achieved the 1,000-unit sales milestone in a short period, these two models currently stand out as category leaders. Despite targeting the same customer base, the MG S5 differentiates itself through its rear-wheel-drive setup, feature-rich cabin, and premium positioning.

MeroAuto recently test drove the MG S5 across parts of Kathmandu and Sindhupalchok, covering routes including Jaharsingh Pauwa, Nanglebhare, and the Melamchi road section. The drive included a mix of uphill climbs, descents, paved highways, and rough gravel stretches.

The SUV maintained stable performance even on uneven terrain, supported by its rear-wheel-drive motor configuration and independent rear suspension. This setup provides improved balance and better handling, particularly on challenging road conditions.

Inside the cabin, the S5 offers heated seats, a heated steering wheel, premium leather upholstery, and the MG Pilot advanced driver assistance system. Safety is supported by six airbags, adding confidence during both city and highway drives.

The SUV is available with two battery options: a 49 kWh pack offering a claimed range of up to 340 kilometers, and a larger 62 kWh battery delivering up to 430 kilometers on a full charge. Buyers can choose based on driving needs and budget preferences.

Paramount Motors, the authorized distributor of MG in Nepal, offers the S5 in three variants. The entry-level Comfort variant is priced at Rs 4.399 million, while the deluxe variant is available at Rs 4.999 million. The larger battery Luxury variant is priced at Rs 5.499 million. Considering its size, technology package, and premium features, the pricing remains competitive within the compact EV SUV segment.

The MG S5 is positioned as a compact crossover SUV designed for urban practicality, offering easy maneuverability and parking convenience. At the same time, its feature set, connectivity options such as built-in Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok through the i-Smart system, and its balanced performance make it attractive to younger, tech-oriented buyers.
