KATHMANDU: Nepalis may soon take to the skies in their own private planes. The government has proposed a new aviation policy that proposes allowing individuals and institutions to own aircraft for personal use.

“Arrangements will be made to allow individuals or institutions to operate aircraft for private purposes. Such permissions will come with mandatory conditions related to airworthiness and aviation safety, and will prohibit commercial flights,” reads the draft of the National Aviation Policy, 2025, prepared by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Existing laws allow procurement of aircraft and helicopters in Nepal only for commercial purposes. Individuals, however, are allowed to charter aircraft for personal use.

The ministry has released the draft policy for public consultation. It will finalize the policy after collecting feedback from stakeholders.
